Hi.

I am trying to create an effect of a light within a glass ball going in a circular motion with its light streaking, like time lapse photography. The effect is almost there with the 2 spheres, the circular motion, glow and blur, but not able to produce the streaking effect. An animation was setup for approximately 4 rotations within 1 second, but motion seemed disjointed and cluttered in some places. An animation for 1 or 2 rotations within 1 second might work if the streaking effect were working.

Motion Blur, camera and glow settings:

Motion Blur:
Shutter angle: 360
Blur intensity: 20
Blur noise: 20
Blur frames: 30

Camera:
f-stop: .5

Glow
Radius: 100
Intensity: 20

What am I missing?

Files attached:
Test 1: 4 rotations within approximately 1 second.
Test 2: Same as test 1 but with more motion blur.
Test 3: 1 rotation within 1 second.

You can put values WAY over 360 in the shutter angle even if it doesn’t make much sense…
Don’t think it will do the job anyway… Have you thought of post processing the effect...?

Wow! That would add realism to the shots, but they would be complex to complete. Looking at 7 spheres placed vertically, 2 sets in each scene with about 3 or 4 scenes lasting no less than 30 seconds each. How much could I complete with the trial version of that particle system?

I have tried to do this in EIAS several times with little luck. In the end I have added the streaks to the animation in After Effect using a plug-in called Au Naturel. http://toolfarm.com/plugins/index.php/Buena_Au_Naturel

This is a good all round set of plug-ins but the one I used is called ... er… ‘Time Lapse’. Unfortunalty the video explaining the feature in the above link seems to be broken. But they do have a demo version which you could try to make sure it gives the results you want.

I’m not too sure what ‘canmovies’ is after but this is an image of what I trying to do and did it with the Au Naturel plug in. I would love to know how to do it in EIAS along. The final animation looks better than this still image as it draws a number eight on it’s side.

That looks more like a stroboscope effect to me.  Motion trails rather than motion blur.  Something I wished Camera could do since motion-vector blurring was introduced.  Seems like it wouldn’t be too hard.  Instead of blurring in two directions, just blur in one.  Of course you can’t have curved vector blurring.

What I am trying to achieve:

Look at picture “TEST 3” (picture below the 1st one). Think of that sphere as spinning in a clockwise direction (if you were looking at it from above), and spinning so fast it produces a trail of light as in time lapse photography or like at a glowing comet. Now, imagine 6 spheres (of 6 other different colours) below it doing the same thing.

This effect is to be part of our feature movie “6 FOR 7”. Without getting into specifics of what the animation represents, the seven spheres will make up a race of extraterrestrial beings. Three of these beings will be created for the movie. Clips of production can be viewed here:

Respect to EIAS but for this type of thing I would probably go with trapcode’s particular for after effects as suggested by richard. Its a great plugin (and renders fast, which seems to be an issue!) and uses true AE 3D space (comp camera) so you can match camera moves to other rendered EI elements (using 3dmation AE scripts, link on the Ei website) You can also clip in z-space with 2 instances of the plugin to get lightstreaks to go in front and behind other objects.
