RT Reflection Problem

I’m trying to render the reflection of a sphere in a mirror. Small reflection angles render fine. Higher reflection angles render a white artifact on the mirror. Please see attached image.

The scene contains a ground plane, a lit sphere, a mirror plane, and a camera to render the mirror and the reflection of the sphere.

Small reflection angles (about 30 degrees) render the reflection of the sphere and the background as expected. Higher reflection angles (about 50 degrees) render a white area on the mirror instead of the reflected background.

The mirror is an UberPlane, excluded in illumination list, material is fully reflective, reflection color white, no Fresnel, no Edge Control, RT Mode Normal. What’s the problem?

Using EIAS 7.0.1 on an iMac G5 OS X 10.4.11.

Hi,
Do you have a white sky backdrop enabled in your world setting?
If so, the mirror plane could be reflecting the sky backdrop.

No backdrop enabled. BTW, the white artifact doesn’t pick up the reflection color, it’s always white.

Here’s an example project

mirrorproblem.prj.zip

TIA

Your prj has RT reflection map (World Dialog, RayTrace Tab) that’s used as “sky” for RT reflections. Adjust this map (or remove it)

Oops! You’re right, of course. Thanks a lot.
