Smooth across faces

Hi,

I have some high resolution models which I render in Camera.
These models have some sharp edges for details which must be shown.
Problem ist: if I deselect the “smooth across faces” option in the shading tab, the polystructure becomes visible.
Is there a hidden button or preference when camera is smothing? A kind of angle threshould or something like that?
The sharp edges are at 90° and lower, the overall polyangle is larger than 160°.
I cannot round the edges because it’s a construction-model which needs these sharp edges for beeing produced.
Thnak you for any hint to ths problem.

Regards

No, you cannot control “smoothing details” on fly. The “smooth across facets” allows to select between smoothing by using current vertices normals and no smoothing (using facets normals). The facets normals are calculated on fly as a perpendiculars to facets. The vertices normals are prepared by model’s creator and stored in model files. The render treats the stored vertices normals “as is” and does not try to re-calculate them as averages of facets normals. It’s reasonable because an “averaged” normal can be much less suitable compare to modeler/plug-in creates.

Hi Igors,

thank you explaining. Make things clearer.
I bring the model from SolidThinking (NURBSModel) via .lwo-file over transporter into Animator.
Is there a chance to change some preferences in transporter?

regards

Yes, you can always replace the original model normal with “averaged” one (calculated as average normal of facets that a vertex belongs to). In Animator you need to re-import FACT with “assume correct normals” option that does this (smooth angle control is there too). Most probably there is same option in Transporter but we don’t remember/familiar with. However, count that “averaged” re-calculated normals can be “less smoothed” than original ones. Example: create a sphere with MrBlobby. It’s well-smoothed. Re-import it with “assume correct normals”. It becomes less smoothed. It’s normal/correct but see yourself how it’s suitable for your prj.

Hi Igors,

I indeed was too blind to see that obvious option.
It works and the reuslts are great.

Thank you again.
